Happy International Dot Day Today! (September 15th-ish)

The book The Dot, by Peter Reynolds, has inspired creativity, courage and collaboration in artists of all ages around the world.  In the story, a girl named Vashti begins a creative journey in her artwork when her art teacher encourages her to “Make a mark and see where it takes you.”
International Dot Day is now celebrated by almost seven million people in 138 countries!!  There are many ways to celebrate - check out http://www.thedotclub.org/dotday/ for inspiration and information.

Second graders were encouraged to practice their creativity in their paintings.  There was only one rule - they could only paint circles or dots!  They enjoyed experimenting and mixing the primary colors.  What different creative ideas and risks do you notice in their work?

Looking forward to a wonderful year together!

I hope that you have enjoyed a wonderful summer!  I am looking forward to seeing your children in art classes soon. We are going to have a great year together!

I am thrilled to share with you that April Caspari will be joining us through December as a teacher intern from the Upper Valley Educator Institute.  April is a local artist and musician and she is excited to become an art teacher.  Some UES kids and families will remember her from Community Connections, where she was an after-school teacher a couple of years ago!  April will be interning with art teacher Barb Austin-Hutchins at Montpelier High School for the spring semester.
Miss April and Mrs. Kane at the end of the first day of school!

I am also happy to share that Gowri Savoor will be visiting Union Elementary School this winter as our artist-in-residence for a Lantern Art Residency.  Following Gowri’s residency, we will celebrate with an evening Community Lantern Parade through the snowy streets of Montpelier. We are so glad to welcome Gowri back to U.E.S.

I hope to see you and your children at Open House in a few weeks!  The students’ artwork will be on display throughout the school.  We will also have information to share about the K-4 Art Curriculum, volunteer opportunities, the Lantern Art Residency and our 2016-17 U.E.S. Arts Calendar!
